  Speech Therapy

The Speech Pathology Department of Wooster Community Hospital provides quality services to persons who are communicatively challenged. Its speech pathologists are members of a highly qualified team of professionals, specially trained to help each patient reach his or her maximum potential in overall development or in recovery from a disease or illness. In addition, our therapists provide services to several school districts in the Wayne and Holmes County as well as community outreach programs.

Speech & Language Disorders in the Child
Speech and language evaluations are provided for children of all ages. Preschool children may participate in speech, language or hearing screenings which help determine if further evaluation of skills is necessary. We have developed a parental training program so that the parent can take an active part in their child's lingual abilities and cognitive interpretation. We have developed community programs for parents to help assess their child's communicative development. Our department is planning student workshops during the summer and school breaks to maintain communication skills during these times.

    Infant Hearing Screening
Since 1990, the Infant Hearing Screening Assessment program has provided a local "first step" in the important process of early identification of children who may be at risk for hearing impairment. The speech pathologist reviews a questionnaire which details information regarding family hearing history, mother's health during pregnancy and the conditions of labor and delivery. If a risk for hearing impairment is present, an infant hearing screening can be completed here at the hospital.

    Community Outreach/
Home Health

The Speech Pathology department is committed to serving the Wayne and Holmes county region. To be eligible for this program, you generally must be confined to your home. This means your condition does not permit leaving the home on a regular basis, therefore Speech Therapy services are then completed in the home environment. The Speech Therapy department meets with support groups to provide helpful information regarding their services. Information regarding this service can be arranged by contacting the rehabilitation department.

Cognitive Retraining

Cognitive retraining is offered to patients of all ages to help them re-learn lost skills due to stroke or traumatic brain injury. For those school-aged individuals, speech pathologists work closely with the school's staff to help the student return to the school environment. For adult patients, the challenge is often returning to the workplace. Speech pathologists help each patient with reading, memory, management of time and money, organization and the safety and orientation skills necessary to regain independence in daily living tasks.

    Swallowing Disorders/Dysphagia

Many individuals who are recovering from a neurological condition or illness such as stroke/CVA frequently experience difficulty in swallowing effectively. The speech pathologists at Wooster Community Hospital are specially trained to diagnose and treat disorders of swallowing through Bedside Swallowing and Modified Barium Swallow Evaluations.

    Degenerative Adult Diseases

Who Is at Risk?

Sometimes when you want it the least, your body needs it the most.  When you feel tired, worn out and stressed out, the last thing you feel like doing is driving down to your health club for an intense workout.  The fact is, this is exactly what you should do. 1
