Surgical Services
The Day of Surgery
While you're having surgery, your family/support person may wait in the surgical waiting lounge. Coffee and tea are provided and a volunteer will inform your family/support person when you arrive in the post-anesthesia care unit. At this time, your doctor will talk to your family. When ready someone will notify a family member you are back in your room.

  The Day of Surgery
Remove fingernail polish, make-up, hairpins, piercings and jewelry before coming to the hospital.

Leave all valuables, money, credit card, etc. at home. If you are going to be in the hospital for more than one day, you may want a few dollars for incidentals.

When you arrive at Wooster Community Hospital, feel free to park in a lot nearest to Patient Registration.

Valet Parking available at no cost.

Go directly to Ambulatory Care Area Nursing Desk in Surgery, located inside the main entrance and across from Patient Registration. From there, you will be escorted to a private room in the surgery center. For the consideration of all, we ask that not more than two visitors be with you in your room.

A nurse will familiarize you with your surroundings and ask you to put on a warming gown, removing all other clothing.

Your blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and temperature will be checked and a nurse will ask a few questions concerning your surgery.

Special preparations for your surgery may be completed at this time, for example: skin preparation such as cleansing the surgical area with a special solution, removal of hair of the surgical area, etc.

A nurse may administer an intravenous (IV) injection (insertion of a needle into the vein) that allows continuous flow of fluids and medications as ordered by the physician.

You will be transported directly from your private room to the surgery room. A cardiac monitor, which shows your heartbeat, will be applied to you along with a pulse oximeter that measures the oxygen content of your blood while you are sedated.

Who Is at Risk?

Sometimes when you want it the least, your body needs it the most.  When you feel tired, worn out and stressed out, the last thing you feel like doing is driving down to your health club for an intense workout.  The fact is, this is exactly what you should do. 1
