Neurology services at Wooster Community Hospital include Neurology testing and neurology consultation. Our neurology testing includes Nerve Conduction Studies(NCS), Electromyography(EMG), Electroencephalogram(EEG), and Transcranial Doppler(TCD).

Nerve conduction studies are when mild electrical currents are applied typically to the arms and/or legs. This is done to see how quickly the nerves respond to the current being applied and how the big the responses are. This detects if there is nerve damage and the severity.

During an EMG, a fine needle is placed under the patient's skin, and inserted into the muscle being tested. The needle measures the electrical activity in the patient's muscles. Not electrical currents are applied with the needle. Most of the time, the Nerve Conduction study and EMG tests are ordered together to diagnose conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Ulnar Neuropathy, and Diabetic Neuropathy.

EEG is testing the electrical activity of the brian. Small metal cups filled with a water soluble paste are applied to the scalp. There is no electrical currents applied. This testing is done mostly to evaluate for seizure activity or strokes.

Transcranial Doppler is an ultrasound of the larger arteries in the brain. This checks for clots or narrowing of the arteries.
