1 Frequently, you hear the term ambulatory care or outpatient surgery and that means patients can usually return home the same day following the procedure. The most common ambulatory care or outpatient surgeries include tonsillectomies, hernia repairs, laparoscopic procedures such as gall bladder removals, arthroscopic procedures and cataract extractions.

Due to advancements in technology, especially the advent of laparoscopic and arthroscopic surgeries, patients experience much less discomfort and recover sooner from surgical procedures. The surgery staff members at Wooster Community Hospital are very experienced efficient in the use of these surgical procedures. We thought you would be interested in knowing a little more about laparoscopic and arthroscopic techniques:

  • Laparoscopic Surgery, also referred to as minimally invasive surgery, is a surgical technique that uses a long, thin telescope-like instrument (the laparoscope) attached to a video camera that transmits images of intestinal organs on a video monitor. Only a very small incision is required for laparoscopic surgery even though Surgeons perform entire operations using this advanced procedure.
  • Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which the internal structures of joints are examined for diagnosis and/or treatment using a tube-like viewing instrument called an arthroscope that contains optical fibers and lenses. The technique of arthroscopy involves inserting the arthroscope through tiny incisions in the skin to access the joint to be examined. The arthroscope is connected to a video camera and the interior of the joint is seen on a television monitor. Arthroscopy can be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of many noninflammatory and inflammatory types of arthritis as well as various injuries within the joint.

1 For all of our inpatient surgeries, Wooster Community Hospital has developed an after surgery "plan of care" for each patient that coordinates the expertise of all appropriate clinical services. For example, an important area of specialty for Wooster Community Hospital is total hip and knee replacements as performed by Orthopedic Surgeonson our active staff. The "plan of care" for these procedures includes early involvement of Rehabilitation services to quickly return patients to a quality lifestyle.

By listening to the health care needs of our community, we continue to bring local access for many surgical specialties to the Surgery and Ambulatory Care Center at Wooster Community Hospital.
