  Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

1 The program uses exercise and education to help cardiac patients once again enjoy activities they consider important to a high quality of life. The program offers Phase 2 and Phase 3 cardiac rehabilitation.

Patients entering Phase 2 cardiac rehab undergo a detailed assessment and orientation prior to starting the program. A doctor's referral is required. Nurses and an exercise physiologist closely supervise and monitor the group exercise sessions monitoring heart rate and heart rhythms. Blood pressure is also checked. The exercise sessions take place three times per week and normally continue for 12 weeks. Exercise levels are adjusted individually as patients progress through the program. The facility includes a variety of exercise machines. Patients and family members are encouraged to attend classes about healthy lifestyles. At the end of Phase 2 each patient is given an exercise prescription for home exercise to that physical fitness levels can be maintained. Medicare and most commercial insurers cover the cost of the Phase 2 program.

Phase 3 cardiac rehabilitation is an exercise maintenance program for those who want to continue exercising in a clinically supervised setting. Participants use the same equipment they used in Phase 2 but no longer wear a heart monitor.

1 Education about heart disease is also an important part of the rehabilitation process at Wooster Community Hospital. Patients and their families are given information on a wide variety of topics, all of which are related to recovering from heart disease and preventing future heart disease. Topics include the anatomy and physiology of the heart, cardiac medications, and risk factors associated with heart disease. This education begins while the patient is still in the hospital and is expanded greatly in the outpatient Phase 2 Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. An individual's risk factors are identified early on and strategies for reducing them are outlined.

1 Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, losing weight, increasing physical activity levels, controlling blood pressure and reducing blood cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of future heart disease. All participants in the Phase 2 program are referred to a clinical dietitian for advice on healthy eating.

    Cardiac Rehab Accreditation

arrow Wooster Community Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was recently recertified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

Successful certification requires a rigorous review of all aspects of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and compliance with the association's stringent standards of care in each area. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Wooster Community Hospital is the only AACVPR certified program in Wayne, Holmes, Medina, and Ashland counties.

Congratulations to Tim Breiner, Sandy Parker, Elaine Troyer, and Amy McLaughlin for their hard work and successful recertification.

Who Is at Risk?

Sometimes when you want it the least, your body needs it the most.  When you feel tired, worn out and stressed out, the last thing you feel like doing is driving down to your health club for a workout.  The fact is, this is exactly what you should do. 1
