Q. My father and I have diabetes. I've heard about programs where we can learn how to manage our diabetes. Will Medicare cover this for Dad? Will my insurance cover it?

A. It sounds like you have heard about Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT). These programs help patients discover how to live safely with diabetes day by day. They learn about balanced eating, exercise, foot care, blood sugar testing, and much more.

The American Diabetes Association urges everyone with diabetes to attend DSMT.
Medicare Part B covers DSMT programs that meet standards set by the American Diabetes Association. A Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) - often an RN - must provide the diabetes training. A registered dietitian must do the nutrition training.

DSMT occurs in both private sessions and group classes. You may receive up to thirteen hours of diabetes and nutrition training in the first year. In addition, Medicare covers four hours of review each following year. You will need a referral from your doctor.

Be aware that you Medicare HMO may not fully cover these Medicare benefits. Private insurance payment for DSMT varies. Yearly deductibles and co-pays also apply. Review your policy or contact your insurance provider to determine your benefit.
