Tongue Thrust
Our therapists treat patients with tongue thrust and habit training. This includes a training technique that involves re-educating the tongue muscles, and muscles that are associated with swallowing. The Therapy focuses on changing the patients swallowing pattern which is often a pre requisite prior to placing a patient in braces.

Autism /Asperger’s Syndrome
We have specialists trained to work specifically with these patients to help with their mobility, speech, posture, and independent functioning. We have developed social groups so that these unique individuals can interact with their peers.

Stroke/CVA/Non Verbal Cognitive Retraining Treatment
Cognitive retraining is offered to patients of all ages to help them re-learn lost skills due to stroke or traumatic brain injury. Speech pathologists help each patient with reading, memory, management of time and money, organization and the safety and orientation skills necessary to regain independence in daily living tasks.

Swallowing Disorders/Dysphagia Treatment
The speech pathologists at Wooster Community Hospital are specially trained to diagnose and treat disorders of swallowing through Bedside Swallowing and Modified Barium Swallow Evaluations.

Adult Neurogenic Diseases
Diseases such as Parkinson's, ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease and dementia affect the individuals’ ability to communicate effectively. The therapist is able to assist the individual in coping with the various stages of their disease process.

Speech & Language Disorders in Children
Speech and language evaluations are provided for children of all ages. Preschool children may participate in speech, language or hearing evaluations which can help determine if further evaluation of skills are necessary. During our treatments parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child's lingual abilities and cognitive interpretation.

Parkinson’s/Lee Silverman Voice Treatment
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment is an intensive program of voice exercises that targets vocal intensity, quality and variation-precisely the areas of difficulty for persons with Parkinson's disease.

The patient is drilled on a series of voicing exercises and is taught to be aware of sensory feedback from the voice, and to self-monitor voicing patterns and voice quality. The increased self-awareness of voice allows for correction of errors and for faster progress toward the target.   The LSVT regimen usually involves 4 training sessions per week for one month (16 sessions).
