The Beaverson Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Institute at Wooster Community Hospital is a privately endorsed foundation providing emergency squads with equipment and advanced education. Every emergency squad in Wayne County has received equipment grants, training equipment, and advanced life support training through funding from the Beaverson EMS Institute. As a result of available lifesaving equipment in emergency squad vehicles and advanced training received by EMS personnel, community residents experiencing an emergency situation receive an extremely high quality of pre-hospital care.

  Quality of Service

The Emergency Department at Wooster Community Hospital is a specialty area providing service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have physicians and nurses trained in Emergency Medicine, as well as a modern facility allowing us to provide quality care in a personal manner. Working as a team, this group of dedicated professionals daily demonstrates their training and experience in trauma, pediatrics, and critical care to meet a wide array of patient services.

When complex procedures such as neuro surgery or invasive cardiology surgery are necessary, patients are transferred to a tertiary care center in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, or Columbus. A tertiary care center is only minutes away since a heliport is on the campus of Wooster Community Hospital and numerous land transport services are available.

    
       
  Triage-Medical Urgency  
  1 The word "triage" is frequently used in all Emergency Departments. It means that medical priority is given to patients who require the most immediate care. For example, a patient experiencing a heart attack would receive medical attention before a patient who does not present with life threatening symptoms. During a non-life threatening "triage", a registered nurse takes a brief history of the patient's medical problem and measures their vital signs (pulse, respirations, blood pressure and temperature).

  arrow Examination & Treatment  
      Emergency Department patients are placed in an examination area where an Emergency Room physician sees them. Following examination and assessment of the patient's symptoms, laboratory and radiology tests may be ordered to help diagnose the patient's condition. Diagnostic capabilities available at Wooster Community Hospital include an onsite Computed Tomography (CT) scan. The Emergency Room physician will discuss the test results with the patient and develop a plan of treatment that may involve other medical staff specialties on staff at Wooster Community Hospital.
       
  arrow Discharge Instructions
      Patients discharged from the Emergency Department are given written instructions on caring for their illness or injury at home. Patients receive the name and phone number of a physician to contact for follow-up care or are referred to their own physician or managed care plan.
