The OSUCCC – James: At the Forefront of Research
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) - James is one of only 49 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation as designated by the NCI, a designation that they have maintained through competitive renewal since 1976. After the site review for their last renewal, they earned the NCI’s highest ranking – “exceptional” – and received a five-year, $23 million NCI support grant. The NCI survey team stated that the OSUCCC - James “should serve as the model for other matrix university-based centers.”
The OSUCCC – James has five highly interactive cancer research programs, each focusing on a different area of cancer research. Through the five programs, the work of members includes basic laboratory studies, translational research, and clinical trials.
Areas of research include:
- Brain and Nervous System Malignancies
- Breast Cancer
- Gastrointestinal Cancers
- Genitourinary Cancers (Prostate, Bladder, Testicular, Kidney)
- Gynecologic Cancers
- Head and Neck Cancers
- Hematologic Malignancies (Leukemia, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma)
- Melanoma
- Sarcoma
- Thoracic Cancer (Cancer of the Lungs or Chest Region)
- Thyroid and Endocrine Cancers
- Uveal (Eye) Melanoma
At Ohio State, more than 340 cancer researchers from 11 of the 15 colleges and their teams work collaboratively, across multiple disciplines, to improve the effectiveness of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Plus, The OSUCCC – James has more than 200 oncologists, each of whom specializes in just one type of cancer. That expert sub-specialization leads to more productive integration with cancer research and, ultimately, to better outcomes.
The OSUCCC – James manages hundreds of active or pending cancer clinical trials, many of which are initiated by their own investigators. Genetic- and molecular-based research helps researchers understand each patient's unique cancer and develop and deliver the most effective targeted therapy that leads to better outcomes, fewer side effects, and more hope.
Wooster Community Hospital is proud to be affiliated with The OSUCCC – James so we can offer the highest quality cancer care right here in our community. For more information, call (330) 262-2800.
