Comprehensive Cancer Care
At Wooster Community Hospital, we know that being diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder can be a stressful time for you and your loved ones. However, there is more hope today than ever before.
A Member of the James Cancer Network at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center
In 2013, WCH Health System collaborated with The James Cancer Network at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) to form Wooster Cancer Care, bringing the most advanced oncology and hematology care to residents of Wayne County and the surrounding areas.
Highly skilled OSUCCC – James health care providers specialize in customized oncology treatment for cancer, and they are available locally to help reduce traveling for patients and their families.
At OSUCCC – James, the vision is to create a cancer-free world, one person, one discovery at a time. This underlies everything they do in working to eradicate cancer through research that translates to innovative and highly targeted patient care.
The OSUCCC – James is the only cancer program in the country that features a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center aligned with a nationally ranked academic medical center and a freestanding cancer hospital on the campus of one of the nation’s largest public universities.
Cancer is no longer defined solely by stage and location, but rather by its biologic and genetic makeup. There is no routine cancer – it is different in each person. Working together and utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and technology, clinicians and researchers at Ohio State are speeding the development and delivery of treatments that target the molecules and markers fueling each person’s unique cancer.
Our cancer services are available under one roof at the Outpatient Pavilion. The ground floor features private and semi-private wellness bays (infusion suites) with a healing garden view, linear accelerator (radiation therapy), and oncology specialized services, including CT scan, lab, and a customization mixture pharmacy specific to chemotherapy treatments.
The Wooster Cancer Care office is also located at the Outpatient Pavilion. The practice features two board-certified hematologists/oncologists, a radiation oncologist, and a certified nurse practitioner.
Every Commission on Cancer-approved program must provide a host of basic services. These services are provided on-site at the facility, by referral, or are coordinated with other facilities or local agencies. Services include:
- Medical Oncology/Hematology
- Oncology Patient Navigator
- Radiation Oncology
- Nutrition in Cancer Care
- Infusion Services
- Pharmacy
- Laboratory
- 3D Mammography
- MRI
- General and Diagnostic X-rays
- Support
- Prevention and Early Detection
- Research
Early detection is the key to survival for many patients with cancer. For example, the five-year survival rate for early-stage lung cancer is 50 percent — but only 17 percent at stage 4. There is a direct correlation between screening and patient outcomes, most notably survival. Lung cancer screening gives a patient the opportunity to improve their odds of survival when malignancies are detected at earlier stages.
Wooster Cancer Care is now providing lung cancer screening services. High-risk patients meet with a provider to discuss the risks and benefits of a low-dose CT scan of the chest. If appropriate, patients will go on to complete an imaging study and receive same-day results.
To be eligible for this lung cancer screening, patients must meet all of the following criteria:
- Age 50-80 years
- A current cigarette smoker, or quit smoking within the last 15 years
- Have at least a 20-pack year smoking history
*To calculate a pack year history, simply multiply the average number of packs smoked per day by the number of years you've smoked. For example, 1 pack per day for 20 years = 20 pack years. Or 2 packs per day for 10 years = 20 packs per year.
Lung Cancer Screening Q&A
Question: I was a cigarette smoker for 30 years. I smoked 1 pack of cigarettes per day but quit 2 years ago. Am I candidate for lung cancer screening?
Answer: Yes, you would be a candidate for a low dose CT scan of the chest for lung cancer screening. Screening for individuals at high risk can detect lung cancer early when it is easier to treat, which increases the probability of cure.

One of the keys to success for a Commission on Cancer-approved program is that the hospital must provide state-of-the-art care for cancer patients seen at the facility for primary, secondary, or tertiary care. The Commission on Cancer Program Standards promote consultation among surgeons, cancer specialists, and staff. This multidisciplinary cooperation results in improved care for you.
