The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a specialized sect of radiology that uses small doses of radioactive materials and radiopharmaceuticals to examine the structure and function of organs within the body. Often used as a diagnostic tool for a wide range of conditions, nuclear medicine may also be used to track the progression of some diseases like cancer.

Nuclear medicine studies may be performed to evaluate the heart, kidneys, bones, and thyroid, to name a few. All nuclear medicine exams require the administration of a radioisotope via an IV injection, oral administration, or inhaled. The purpose of the radioisotope is to allow visualization of anatomy as well as physiology of the area in question.

Common Conditions Diagnosed with Nuclear Medicine Studies

Nuclear medicine studies are tried-and-true methods used to diagnose a wide range of conditions. Your provider may recommend a nuclear medicine study to diagnose the following conditions:

  • Cancers
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Abnormal functioning of the thyroid
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Kidney disorders
  • Bone conditions, such as osteomyelitis or stress fractures

The list above is by no means comprehensive. If you feel you may benefit from a nuclear medicine study given your undiagnosed symptoms, we encourage you to come in and see one of the board-certified physicians at Wooster Community Hospital. We’ll be happy to sit down with you, listen to your concerns, evaluate your condition, and provide you with a personalized treatment plan to accurately diagnose and address your condition.

Preparing for Your Nuclear Medicine Diagnostic Screening

There are a number of different nuclear medicine procedures, and the preparation for each can vary. Some tests may require fasting and temporarily discontinuing your medications (per your physician's recommendation only), while others allow you to eat. Your board-certified doctor will provide you with detailed instructions to properly prepare for your diagnostic screening prior to your screening appointment. If you do not hear from our team, we encourage you to reach out to us within the days leading up to your appointment with us.

Nuclear Medicine Diagnostic Test Scheduling

Nuclear medicine is offered at Wooster Community Hospital, with emergency services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
