The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Hyperbaric Chambers

In addition to wound treatment, we have two hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) chambers. HBO therapy involves breathing in 100 percent oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This allows you to quickly absorb more oxygen, which is transported to tissue throughout the body, helping fight infection and stimulating the release of growth factors that promote healing.

The WCH Wound Healing Center has been serving the community since 2002. In that time, we have averaged a 97 percent heal rate while serving well over 10,000 people suffering from nonhealing wounds such as those from radiation, injury, or diabetes. Read what our patients have to say: Wound Care After the Effects of Radiation Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is for me?

If you have a wound that hasn’t healed in four weeks, consult the Wound Healing Center at Wooster Community Hospital. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy may be an appropriate part of your treatment plan. A physician at the center will evaluate your wound and determine the best course of treatment.

How long do hyperbaric oxygen treatments last?

On average, each treatment last about two hours. This includes the time to pressurize and depressurize the chamber plus 90 minutes at the prescribed air pressure treatment level. Patients with nonhealing wounds may need 20 - 40 treatment sessions to achieve the desired results.

What can I do during hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Each chamber is equipped with its own television so that you can watch TV or a movie during your treatment. You may not bring anything in the chamber with you, including books and newspapers. If you have a movie you would like to watch or music you would like to hear, please bring it with you.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy painful or dangerous?

No, the only sensation you may experience is during the pressurization phase of the treatment when the slowly increasing air pressure will push on your eardrums. Yawning or swallowing can relieve that feeling of fullness in the ears.
