The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Latching On: Techniques For Successful Breastfeeding

September 6, 2024

Lactation Consultant Appointment

Breastfeeding is a beautiful and important bonding experience between a mother and her newborn child. However, it can often come with challenges, especially for new moms.

This comprehensive guide will empower you with the knowledge and techniques needed for successful breastfeeding. It will help you overcome common hurdles and ensuring that both you and your baby thrive.

The Importance of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is recommended by health professionals worldwide for its numerous health benefits to both mother and baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life. It should be followed with continued breastfeeding along with introducing complementary foods for at least the first year.

Health Benefits for Babies

Breast milk is filled with essential nutrients, antibodies, and enzymes. These help your baby grow and develop. It provides ideal nutrition that is tailored to your baby’s needs. It promotes healthy brain development and strengthens the immune system. In fact, breast-fed babies have a lower risk of infections, allergies, and chronic conditions.

Health Benefits for Mothers

Breastfeeding benefits mothers as well. It helps you recover faster from childbirth by releasing hormones that help return your uterus to normal size, which can reduce postpartum bleeding. Additionally, breastfeeding can lower your risk of breast and ovarian cancers. It also lowers your risk of type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression.

Common Challenges in Breastfeeding

Many new moms face struggles when beginning to breastfeed. Here are common examples:

Difficulty with Latching On

A common challenge new moms experience is difficulty getting their baby to latch on correctly. A proper latch is crucial for effective breastfeeding and preventing nipple pain or damage.

Milk Supply Concerns

Some mothers worry about not producing enough milk. It is important to understand that frequent nursing and ensuring a proper latch can help stimulate milk production.

Sore Nipples and Engorgement

Sore nipples and breast engorgement can make breastfeeding uncomfortable. Learning correct techniques and taking care of your breasts can alleviate these issues.

Techniques for Successful Breastfeeding

Thankfully, there are a variety of techniques new moms can try to improve their results with breastfeeding, such as:

Positioning Your Baby

Proper positioning is key to a good latch. Try different breastfeeding positions to find the one that works best for you and your baby.

  • Cradle Hold: Hold your baby in your arms with their head resting in the crook of your elbow. Their body should be facing yours.
  • Cross-cradle Hold: This is similar to the cradle hold but you should use the opposite arm to support your baby’s head and body.
  • Football Hold: Tuck your baby under your arm, like holding a football, with their head resting in your hand.
  • Side-lying Position: Lie on your side with your baby facing you, allowing for a more relaxed nursing experience.

Achieving a Proper Latch

Proper latching ensures that your baby receives enough milk. It also prevents nipple pain. Here are steps to achieve a good latch:

  • Align baby’s nose with nipple. Position your baby so that their nose is in line with your nipple. That will encourage them to open their mouth wide.
  • Wait for a wide-open mouth. Gently tickle your baby’s lips with your nipple to stimulate a wide-open mouth.
  • Bring baby to Breast. Quickly bring your baby to your breast. Aim your nipple toward the roof of their mouth.
  • Ensure a deep latch. Your baby should take in a good portion of the areola, not just the nipple.

Recognizing Effective Nursing

Effective nursing is vital for your baby’s nourishment and your comfort. Signs of effective nursing include:

  • Regular Swallowing: You should hear or see your baby swallowing milk.
  • Rhythmic Suckling: Your baby should have a rhythmic suckling pattern with occasional pauses.
  • Content Baby: After feeding, your baby should seem satisfied and relaxed.
