The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Recovering from Knee Replacement Surgery: Top Tips

August 8, 2025

A post-operative patient applies ice to their knee after undergoing knee replacement surgery during their recovery.

Knee replacement surgery can improve your quality of life, easing chronic pain and restoring mobility. However, the success of the procedure depends significantly on how well you manage your recovery. Whether you are eager to return to your routine or are nervous about the process, post-op care is vital.

This guide highlights some key tips for a smooth recovery. From managing your pain to building strength and flexibility, these recommendations can help you.

1. Follow Your Doctor’s Guidance

Your healthcare provider will give you a specific set of instructions for recovery. These instructions will usually include:

  • Medication schedules
  • Physical activity recommendations
  • How to monitor your wound

Follow these instructions as closely and as consistently as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your doctor right away. Ignoring issues could lead to complications that may slow your recovery.

2. Prioritize Pain Management

Pain is a natural part of the recovery process. Managing it effectively will improve your comfort and allow you to stay on track with physical therapy. Your surgeon will likely prescribe medications to manage post-surgery pain. Take these medications as directed. Do not wait for the pain to become severe.

For additional relief, consider ice packs to reduce swelling around the knee joint. Always use a barrier between the ice and your skin to prevent irritation. Elevating your legs while resting can also help control swelling.

3. Commit to Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is one of the most important steps in your recovery. It helps you regain strength, flexibility, and mobility in your knee. Your physical therapist will create a personalized exercise plan tailored to your needs. Perform these exercises daily as guided by your therapist.

Some exercises may seem challenging at first. However, consistency is key to rebuilding the muscles around your knee and improving joint function. Contact your physical therapist promptly if you feel sharp, unexpected pain during or after an exercise.

4. Use Assistive Devices

Do not rush to walk on your own too soon. Assistive devices like walkers, crutches, or canes help support your weight. They can aid you until your knee gains enough strength to bear it on its own. Use these devices as long as your doctor recommends, even if you feel like you have recovered.

Transitioning away from assistive devices too early may increase your risk of falling. Doing so may also cause further injury.

5. Maintain a Balanced Diet

Your body requires the right nutrients to heal after surgery. A diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals will support tissue repair and boost your energy levels.

Include lean meats, nuts, leafy greens, whole grains, and colorful fruits in your meals. Additionally, staying hydrated is equally important. Water helps your body eliminate toxins and reduces inflammation around the surgical area. Having about eight glasses of water per day can help you stay hydrated.

6. Keep Your Wound Clean and Dry

Proper wound care minimizes the risk of infection. Typically, your surgeon will advise you on how to clean and cover the incision site. Avoid soaking the wound in water until your doctor confirms it is safe to do so.

Look out for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, drainage, or unusual warmth around the incision. Contact your doctor as soon as you can if you notice any of these signs in your wound. Early detection and treatment are crucial.

7. Do Not Skip Follow-Up Appointments

Regular follow-up visits allow your doctor of orthopedics in Wooster, OH, to monitor your progress. Follow-ups also help them address any concerns. During these appointments, your doctor will check the condition of your knee and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Sticking to your follow-up schedule ensures that issues are caught and treated early. This helps reduce setbacks in your recovery.

8. Gradually Increase Activity Levels

It may sometimes be tempting to get back to your normal routine quickly. However, overexerting yourself can be counterproductive. Instead, focus on gradually increasing your level of physical activity. Start with low-impact movements like short walks around the house or gentle stretches.

Once your doctor approves, you can incorporate activities like swimming or cycling into your recovery plan.

These exercises are beneficial, as they strengthen the knees without putting too much strain on them. Avoid high-impact activities such as running or jumping until your doctor gives you clearance.

9. Focus on Rest and Sleep

Recovery takes time, and your body needs plenty of rest to heal. Ensure you are getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Your body needs quality sleep to repair damaged tissues. It also reduces inflammation around the surgical site.

Set up a comfortable resting environment with enough pillows to support your knee. Elevating your leg slightly while resting may also help reduce swelling.

10. Join a Support Community

Recovering from a major surgery can sometimes feel isolating. It can help to connect with others who have undergone knee replacement surgery. Other people can provide emotional support and insights about recovery.

Online forums, local groups, or hospital-hosted programs allow you to share your experiences. They also give you the chance to ask questions and learn from the journeys of others. Knowing that others are going through similar experiences can bolster your confidence and resolve.
