The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Does WCH Health System Have a Spine Surgeon on Staff?

September 25, 2020

The Wooster Community Hospital offers Wooster and the surrounding area a range of services, such as cardiology, women’s health, neurology, chiropractic, and more. Its focus is to be a headquarters for a majority of people’s health concerns. That’s why it also has spinal surgeons on staff to conduct surgeries as well as physical therapy sessions to address back pains and other types of physical discomforts.

WCH SPINE SURGEONS

It has eight orthopedic surgeons, two specialize in spine procedures. These surgeons use advanced surgical techniques to optimize a patient’s recovery.

A patient will receive thorough evaluation of his/her spinal condition and overall health, that way, the surgeon can determine the ideal treatment regimen fit for the patient’s lifestyle and health concerns.

TYPES OF SPINAL CONDITIONS TREATED WITH SURGERY

Disc Herniation – a condition that occurs when the contents of a spinal disc pushes through its shell.

Bulging Disc occurs when the shell of a disc weakens and the contents pushes against this weakening.

Spinal Stenosis –  a condition that causes the spinal column to narrow.

If you got into a car accident, got injured during a sports event, or any other personal injury that affects the spine, orthopedic surgery may be used to correct the problem.

Spinal deformities and tumors may also be repaired through surgical measures.

TYPES OF SPINAL SURGERIES

DISCECTOMY

A discectomy is a procedure that a surgeon uses to fix disc herniation. He or she removes the damaged portion of the disc that’s placing pressure on the nearby nerves.

Spinal Fusion

A spinal fusion surgery is a technique surgeons use to correct scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, and issues with spinal alignment. During a spinal fusion, your surgeon fuses two vertebrae using either  donor bone or your bone to correct spinal stability problems.

LAMINECTOMY

A laminectomy classifies as a decompression surgery similar to a discectomy. During a laminectomy, your surgeon removes the rear portion of your spine, known as your lamina. It’s responsible for covering your spinal canal. Once removed, it takes pressure off your nerves and spinal cord.

Kyphoplasty/Vertebroplasty

Your surgeon will use either kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty to treat a compression fracture. Both surgeries consist of a surgeon injecting medical-grade cement into your vertebra. This relieves pain and prevents the vertebra from collapsing further.

ARTIFICIAL DISC REPLACEMENT

Artificial disc replacement surgery corrects degenerative or worn discs. Your surgeon replaces your dysfunctional disc with an artificial one consisting of either metal or metal and plastic combined.

Foraminotomy

Foraminotomy categorizes as a decompression surgery. Your surgeon may use it to treat tumors, spondylosis, disc degeneration, and congenital problems. During this surgery, your surgeon removes the blockage in the intervertebral foramen – a space in between your vertebrae.

NUCLEOPLASTY

Nucleoplasty is a surgery your practitioner may recommend to treat a bulging disc. Your surgeon uses a needle that releases radio waves that shrink the bulging disc, specifically by dissolving a small portion of the disc.

This relieves pressure on your nerves to stop the pain, numbness, tingling, and other nerve-related symptoms in your back.
