The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Healthy Eating During Pregnancy: Nutrition Tips for Moms-to-Be

December 8, 2023

Pregnancy is a critical phase wherein an expectant mother needs to take care of herself and her unborn child. Nutrient-rich food plays a crucial role during pregnancy to help the baby grow and develop properly. Healthy eating during pregnancy is essential to ensure that the baby gets all the vital nutrients required for their development.

Here are five basic nutritional tips that will help moms-to-be maintain a healthy diet and achieve a healthy pregnancy:

  1. Eat a balanced diet. A balanced diet before and throughout pregnancy is essential. The mother needs to focus on eating nutritious food every day, which includes proteins, minerals, vitamins, and fibers. They need to include plenty of green vegetables and fruits in their diet, which contain important vitamins and minerals. Whole-grain foods offer essential nutrients like iron, which is required for red blood cell formation.
  2. Include calcium-rich food. Calcium is an essential mineral that is necessary for the development of the baby’s bones and teeth. Moms-to-be should focus on calcium-rich foods, like milk, cheese, calcium-fortified juices, yogurt, and leafy vegetables. Generally, 1000-1300 mg of calcium is required daily during pregnancy.
  3. Increase protein intake. Protein is a critical nutrient needed to help the baby’s organs develop. It also helps in regenerating and producing new cells. Some good sources of proteins include beans, chicken, fish, eggs, and dairy products.
  4. Avoid junk and processed foods. Avoiding high-calorie or sugary food is necessary during pregnancy as it can lead to gestational diabetes and obesity. It’s best to avoid processed or junk food and have home-cooked meals using fresh and nutritious ingredients.
  5. Stay Hydrated. Drinking a lot of water during pregnancy is essential to being hydrated. It also helps in hydrating the amniotic sac, where the baby grows. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day is ideal for pregnant women.

The best foods to eat while pregnant include:

  • Leafy green vegetables – Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are rich in essential nutrients like folate, iron, and calcium. These nutrients are crucial for fetal development and help prevent birth defects.
  • Legumes – Lentils, chickpeas, beans, and peas are excellent sources of protein, fiber, iron, and folate. They provide essential nutrients while also helping to manage pregnancy-related constipation.
  • Dairy products – Foods such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium, protein, and vitamin D. These nutrients are important for the baby’s bone development and can also support the mother’s own bone health.
  • Lean protein – Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and tofu are great sources of protein. Protein is essential for the growth and development of the baby, as well as the production of new cells and tissues in the mother’s body.
  • Whole grains – Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, oats, and whole wheat bread are high in fiber and provide essential vitamins and minerals. They also help in regulating blood sugar levels and preventing constipation.
  • Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber. They can help boost the immune system and contribute to the overall health of both the mother and the baby.
  • Avocado: This is an excellent source of healthy fats, fibers, and folate. It can help with the baby’s brain and tissue development, while also providing energy for the mother.

It is important for pregnant women to consult with their healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to ensure they are meeting their specific nutritional needs during pregnancy. The above recommendations are general and specific advice may vary depending on individual circumstances.
