The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Pain Management Strategies for Endometriosis: Coping with Chronic Discomfort

January 12, 2024

Endometriosis, text words typography written with wooden letter

Endometriosis is a common condition that affects one in ten women during their reproductive years. It is a chronic disorder that causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside of the uterus, leading to heavy and painful menstrual cycles, pelvic pain, and discomfort during sex.

Living with endometriosis can be incredibly challenging, as it is a painful and often misunderstood condition. However, there are ways to manage the pain and discomfort associated with endometriosis.

Home-Based Remedies for Endometriosis

Although there is no known cure for endometriosis, consistency in positive home-based remedies can provide some relief to the discomfort associated with endometriosis.

These pain management strategies include:

  • Over-the-Counter Pain Relief Medications – For mild to moderate pain caused by endometriosis, over-the-counter pain relief medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen may provide relief by reducing inflammation and effectively blocking pain signals from nerves. It is recommended to take the medication just before the pain starts or as soon as it starts. Don’t wait until the pain becomes unbearable. Taking medication regularly but cautiously will help manage pain effect, even if the menstrual cycle becomes irregular.
  • Heat Therapy – Heat therapy is an effective way to help ease menstrual period pain along with discomfort due to endometriosis. Applying heat can increase blood flow to the uterus and help relax the pelvic muscles that causes cramping and pain. Heat pads, hot-water bottles, and warm baths are common ways to apply heat therapy. Heat therapy should be applied to the lower abdomen or lower back, the typical areas affected by endometriosis. It is recommended to use heat therapy for at least 20 minutes or until the discomfort is relieved.
  • Exercise and Relaxation Therapy – Endometriosis pain can often cause fatigue and further discomfort. Light exercise like walking, stretching, or yoga can help boost energy level and increase flexibility. Exercise can also help ease endometriosis symptoms by relaxing the pelvic muscles and improving blood flow to the uterus. Relaxation therapy, such as deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness techniques, can help reduce the stress and anxiety associated with chronic pain. Exercise along with relaxation therapy can help the patient manage pain better and improve their quality of life.
  • Dietary Changes – Dietary changes are suggested by some health professionals to help alleviate endometriosis symptoms. Sugary, fried, or processed foods can cause inflammation, which can increase the pain and discomfort of endometriosis symptoms. A healthy and balanced diet can help expose the body to fewer inflammatory foods and provide the necessary nutrients to boost the immune system. Food containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and seeds, help reduce inflammation. Fiber-rich food like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains help in regular bowel movements, often disrupted by endometriosis.
  • Prescription Medications and Surgery – For more severe symptoms, a healthcare provider may suggest prescription medication or surgery. Hormonal birth control can help regulate the menstrual cycle and lessen endometriosis symptoms. Depo-Provera or the Nexplanon implant are other options for birth control. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists or antagonists can help shrink endometriosis tissue by reducing the levels of estrogen in the body. In severe cases where other treatments haven’t worked, surgery to remove the endometriosis tissues may be necessary. It’s recommended to speak with your healthcare provider before deciding on any medication or surgical options.
