The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Understanding Common Injuries: A Guide for Prevention and Recovery

February 23, 2024

Common Injuries - Wooster Community Hospital

Sustaining an injury cannot be only painful, but also frustrating and inconvenient. While they are an unpleasant fact of life, common injuries don’t have to be debilitating. In the unfortunate event that you do sustain an injury, early treatment and proper rehabilitation can help speed up the recovery process.

Whether you’re an athlete or simply participating in daily activities, it’s important to understand how to prevent and treat common injuries and how to get back to full health as soon as possible if you do sustain one.

Four Common Injuries

There are several preventable and treatable injuries that most people may experience at some point in their lives.

  1. Sprains and Strains: Sprains and strains are extremely common injuries and can occur in any part of the body. They often occur when a muscle or ligament is stretched beyond its normal range of movement. While sprains tend to affect ligaments, strains usually affect muscles or tendons. The most common areas of the body for sprains and strains include the ankle, knee, wrist, and back. To prevent these types of injuries, make sure to stretch before exercising, wear appropriate footwear, and maintain good posture.

If you do suffer from a sprain or strain, remember to use RICE – rest, ice, compression, and elevation. RICE therapy can help relieve pain and swelling and promote healing. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also provide relief. If the pain persists or if you experience severe swelling, you should consult a healthcare professional.

  1. Fractures: Fractures, or broken bones, occur when there is a break or crack in a bone. This type of injury requires immediate medical attention, as it can cause severe pain and may also lead to complications such as infection. Common areas for fractures include the wrist, arm, ankle, and hip. To prevent fractures, avoid high-risk activities such as contact sports, wear protective gear when necessary, and make sure to maintain good bone health through proper nutrition, exercise, and vitamin D intake.

If you suspect you have a fracture, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. Treatment may include immobilization with a cast or brace, pain medication, or in some cases, surgery.

  1. Tendinitis: Tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon, typically caused by repetitive motions or overuse of a particular joint. It commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and knee. To prevent tendinitis, make sure to warm up before physical activity, stretch, and avoid repetitive motions that strain the tendons.

Treatment for tendinitis may include rest, ice, over-the-counter pain medication, and physical therapy. In severe cases, it may be necessary to undergo surgery.

  1. Contusions: Contusions, or bruises, occur when the small blood vessels under the skin are damaged, usually as a result of blunt trauma. Common areas of the body for contusions include the legs, arms, and buttocks. To prevent contusions, wear protective equipment when necessary (such as helmets, padding, or shin guards) and avoid high-risk activities that increase your chances of getting hit.

Treating a bruise involves applying ice or a cold compress to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease the pain, as well.

It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for an injury.
