The Baxter production facility in North Carolina, which supplies 85% of Ohio hospitals with IV solutions, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene. This has led to a significant reduction in IV fluid supplies, potentially delaying surgeries at WCH. Hospital leadership is actively implementing mitigation strategies to adapt to the situation and maintain exceptional care for our community.

Vascular Services Available at Bloomington Vascular Practice

November 18, 2022

Doctor Checking patient Heart

Your vascular system, commonly called the circulatory system, includes your heart, blood, and blood vessels. This entire structure delivers nutrients and oxygen throughout your body. It’s also responsible for removing waste products from your person.

A vascular physician can help diagnose and treat if you have problems affecting this system. Let’s talk about the services available to you at Bloomington Vascular Practice.

VASCULAR SURGERY

Vascular surgery comes in different forms. The operation primarily depends on your condition, health status, and symptoms.

Our expert providers will diagnose your health concern and recommend surgery should you need it. Treatment may vary depending on your illness. We perform different surgical procedures for the following conditions:

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis refers to plaque buildup in your arteries. An artery is a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrient-rich blood away from your heart. This buildup typically includes cholesterol and fats. When they accumulate, they cause the artery to narrow and prevent blood from flowing.

If your condition is severe, your doctor may recommend percutaneous coronary intervention. Your surgeon will perform it to free up the clogged artery.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

DVT typically affects the legs, causing them to ache and swell. It happens when a clot forms in your deep veins. Unlike arteries, veins move blood toward your heart.

Your provider may perform a surgical thrombectomy to remove the clot.

Aneurysms

An aneurysm occurs when blood vessel walls become weak. When blood passes through the vessels, it can push on these walls and cause a balloon-like structure to form. This bulge is an aneurysm.

Your surgeon may address an aneurysm using craniotomy, an open surgery that exposes your brain. But they can also use endovascular repair, a less invasive approach.

Carotid Artery Stenosis

Your carotid arteries supply blood from the neck up. When you develop atherosclerosis in these blood vessels, carotid artery stenosis occurs. Your provider can remove the plaque buildup through carotid endarterectomy.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Typically, blood flows in one direction. The arteries carry it away from the heart while the veins transport it back. You have venous valves to ensure blood doesn’t flow backward, but it does if this controlling structure is weak. That is chronic venous insufficiency.

Your surgeon may tie off the affected vein or remove it if it has severe damage.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins typically affect the legs because of the constant strain on your lower body’s blood vessels. This pressure may cause the veins to twist and become more pronounced, especially if the blood vessel walls are weak.

If you choose, your surgeon may remove the affected veins through an operation.

Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Raynaud’s phenomenon most commonly comes with a pins and needles sensation. It occurs when your fingers, or sometimes, your toes, change color due to stress or low temperatures.

Your provider may perform surgery to cut these nerves to halt their reactions to the triggers.

Pulmonary Embolism

A pulmonary embolism is when a blood clot blocks blood flow in a lung artery. This condition often results from DVT, when a clot forms in your leg veins. These clots travel up your heart’s right side, then toward your lungs.

The surgery for this is pulmonary embolectomy.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)

PVD causes your blood vessels to narrow, spasm, or sustain blockages. It affects the structures outside your heart.

Bypass surgery is when your surgeon makes new ways for blood to flow properly.
